Fast Color centers on Ruth (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), a recovering drug addict who returns home to reunite with her mother (Lorraine Toussaint) and daughter (Saniyya Sidney). This isn’t your average family drama, however, as Ruth along with her family possess supernatural abilities.
“I love the fact that the film, as a whole, is really set in this very grounded, gritty world,” said Mbatha-Raw. “It’s about three generations of women of color who have these special powers and also are mothers. When I realized it’s not really at all a conventional superhero film. There’s no capes, there’s no suits. It’s not about destruction and weapons and the more typical more masculine style of superhero movie. They’re mothers – I’d never seen a superhero who was a mother before.”
