In the history of the Star Trek franchise, Sonequa Martin-Green is the first African-American woman to get top billing on any of its shows or movies. When she was first offered the role, she approached Nichelle Nichols — beloved in the Trek universe as the original series’ Lieutenant Uhura — and asked for her advice. Martin-Green told us Nichols could not have been any more supportive, and that the diversity seen on the series is right in line with the original vision set out by Star Trek’s creator, Gene Roddenberry.
