A Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson pairing is definitely welcome, and with The Highwaymen they have excellent material at the disposal. The project, directed by John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side, The Alamo), centers the capture of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow by former Texas Rangers Frank Hamer (Costner) and Maney Gault (Harrelson). Arthur Penn’s revered film Bonnie and Clyde and the subsequent miniseries Bonnie & Clyde take on the perspective of the criminals, but finally seeing this tale from the lawmen’s side has been a long time coming.
The project also reunites Hancock with Hidalgo screenwriter John Fusco, and the scribe has spent years researching the life of Frank Hamer. Paul Newman and Robert Redford were slated to star in the film but the project was scrapped due to Newman’s health. Hancock’s last film The Founder featured one of Michael Keaton’s best performances (as former McDonald’s and San Diego Padres owner Ray Kroc), so The Highwaymen is a feature that I’m putting on my must watch list. The Highwaymen hits select theaters March 15 and comes out worldwide March 29 on Netflix.
