Christian Bale received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his work in The Big Short, a feature directed by Adam McKay. The pair reunite for Vice, a look into the life of former Vice President Dick Cheney. Bale gained over forty pound to play Cheney, and since the actor is definitely used to drastically changing his body in various films (The Machinist, Rescue Dawn, and Batman Begins come to mind), taking on the physicality of Cheney wasn’t the biggest challenge of Vice.

Instead, Bale wanted to make sure he didn’t deliver a predictable impersonation of Cheney, and thought it was a “vast undertaking,” the actor was determined to capture the essence of his character (click on the media bar to hear Bale).

Vice, co-starring Sam Rockwell as George W. Bush, opens nationwide December 25.
