For playing the role of Lynn Bracken, a call girl made to look like actress Veronica Lake, L.A. Confidential’s Kim Basinger won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. During the interviews for L.A. Confidential, Basinger admitted she could relate to the image versus reality world that surrounded Bracken.
“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” said Basinger. “That’s number one. What someone thinks as beautiful might not be to someone else. Especially if you come to L.A. and just do movies that you are drawn to do and one of them ends up giving you a tag at the end of your name (which says” ‘sex symbol.’ Then yeah, it causes a lot of problems for you to be taken seriously, to be given the opportunity to do what it is you know you can do. There are hurdles you have to get over, absolutely.”
