In Bad Times Times at the El Royale, seven strangers check into a Lake Tahoe with a bunch of questions to be answered. Drew Goddard, who directed 2012’s twist infused Cabin in the Woods, brings a similar aesthetic to this film.
Chris Hemsworth plays Billy Lee, a cult leader whom the actor describes as a sociopath. “(I did) a lot of research on cult figures and trying to understand that you just can’t play evil,” said Hemsworth who co-starred in Goddard’s Cabin in the Woods. “He has to believe he’s doing some good in some way or what is the justification for that? For me, whether he thought he was helping people or whether he was just addicted to the idea that he was helping people was probably truer. I wanted to create someone who that had a charisma, that was alluring and attractive (and had) a physicality and a movement that was incredibly confident and at ease with things.”
