Procedurals tend to be the longest-running shows on television, but if you’d told Mariska Hargitay back in 1999 that her new show, Law & Order: SVU, would still be on 20 seasons later, she probably would have laughed at you. After all, at the time, only one TV drama (Gunsmoke) had ever crossed the 20-year threshold, so who could blame her for being incredulous? Yet here we are, at the start of the 2018-2019 television season, and SVU is about to begin its record-tying 20th year. (One of the shows it’s tying, along with Gunsmoke, is the show SVU was spun off from, Law & Order.) She may not be laughing now, but Hargitay still finds it amazing and unbelievable that her show’s still going strong after all these years. (Click on the media bar below to hear Mariska Hargitay)

The 20th season of Law & Order: SVU airs Thursday nights at 10/9c on NBC.
