John C. Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix play Eli and Charlie Sisters, hitmen siblings in the Western The Sisters Brothers. Both actors are part of filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson’s celebrated ensemble (Reilly’s PTA credits include Hard Eight and Magnolia, Phoenix worked on The Master and Inherent Vice), and it’s no surprise that bonding on the set didn’t call for many words.

“We just started spending time together,” said Reilly. “We’d go for walks up to this statue at the top of this hill in Almeria, Spain. And we’d walk for an hour and a half and literally not say one word to each other, but just be there with each other and bearing witness to each other’s existence, sensing each other’s needs and energy, that’s been a lot of the experience with Joaquin and by extension, Eli and Charlie.
