The terrifying thriller Hereditary features Toni Collette as Annie, a mother whose family gradually becomes undone by forces that are possibly beyond their control. Gabriel Byrne co-stars as Annie’s relatively clueless (but caring) husband Steve, with Alex Wolff and Milly Shapiro playing their beleaguered children Peter and Charlie.
To give too much plot points behind Hereditary would do this tale an injustice, but it’s safe to say that Collette delivers one of her most emotionally complex roles to date. Annie, a woman who makes miniature art pieces for a living, is still struggling with her mother’s death (the two weren’t very close) and is also a bit distanced from her own family. Collette, who received an Oscar nod for her work in The Sixth Sense, may be in line for another nomination with Hereditary.
