Even if you’re a diehard cinephile, Larry Cohen may not be a household name. Hopefully things will change with the impending release of the documentary King Cohen. A prolific writer and director (Black Caesar, It’s Alive, Original Gangstas), Cohen has also received had his moment in the mainstream thanks to his screenplay for 2002’s Phone Booth. The majority of Cohen’s career has seen him thriving outside the Hollywood system, and this indie filmmaker has been an inspiration to his contemporaries (directors Martin Scorsese and John Landis are interviewed) and a new generation of artists. Actors Yaphet Kotto (Bone) and Fred Williamson (Black Caesar), are also featured in King Cohen.
