Director David Zellner’s 2014 feature Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter was a visual and atmospheric thriller that only gets better with time, and having him take on the Western genre sounds like an absolutely great idea. Damsel, co-starring Robert Pattinson and Mia Wasikowska, should, even at its worst, be interesting.

This time out Zellner co-directs the feature with his brother Nathan (they co-wrote Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter) in the story about a pioneer named Samuel Alabaster (Robert Pattinson) who travels through the Wild West to marry his true love Penelope (Mia Wasikowska). Accompanying him on his journey is a drunkard named Parson (David Zellner) and a miniature horse named Butterscotch. From the looks of the trailer, Damsel is not a by the numbers Western, and hopefully the Zellners’ blend of comedy and darkness will give us another memorable cinematic experience.

Pattinson received some of the best reviews of his career with last year’s Good Time (Wasikowska was last seen in The Man With The Iron Heart). The feature hits theaters June 22nd via Magnolia Pictures. Check out the trailer and tell us what you think!
