King of Hearts, a comedy classic headlined by Alan Bates (The Fixer, Women in Love), hits Blu-ray, DVD and digital platforms June 12. As part of the Cohen Film Collection, the feature was rereleased this year and received a 4K restoration.
Set in World War I, the story centers on Private Plumpick (Bates), a Scottish soldier tasked with disarming a bomb in a French village. The town is mainly deserted, though former psychiatric patients who escaped after the villagers’ exodus remain. Accepted into the environment as the “King of Hearts,” Plumpick gradually prefers the literal inmates running the asylum dynamic over the war that is at their door. Geneviève Bujold (Obsession, Choose Me) co-stars in the Philippe de Broca directed feature. Last but definitely not least, Oscar winning composer Georges Delerue (Contempt, Jules and Jim) provides the score.
Special features include audio commentary from film critic Wade Major, a new interviews with Bujold and cinematographer Pierre Lhomme, and the 2018 rerelease trailers (U.S. and French).
