The original Superfly is considered the pinnacle film in the blaxploitation genre, as the 1972 feature was powered by Curtis Mayfield’s iconic music (“Pusherman” and “Freddie’s Dead”) and a memorable performance from Ron O’Neal. Director X, screenwriter Alex Tse (Watchmen), and lead actor Trevor Jackson (Grown-ish) are introducing a whole new generation of movie fans to the storyline of a drug dealer (Jackson) who’s focused on making one last score before heading into the sunset. Joel Silver, the producer behind the Lethal Weapon and The Matrix films, is producing Superfly with Future in charge of the flick’s music. O’Neal directed and starred in the sequel Super Fly T.N.T. (co-written by Roots scribe Alex Haley) the following year, and if this remake is a hit, sequel possibilities may be a possibility.
