For 80 years, he’s fought for truth, justice, and the American way. He’s done it in comic books, on TV, and in films. Of course, he’s Superman, and he first appeared in the April 18, 1938 debut issue of Action Comics. With so many different versions of the Man of Steel, there’s always one that stands out above the rest: the movie Superman played by Christopher Reeve. Richard Donner, who directed the 1978 movie that introduced the little-known Reeve to the world, told us what it was like to meet the future superstar for the very first time.
