One of the great box office surprises this year is the success of the faith based drama I Can Only Imagine. The picture made $17.1 million in its first weekend, coming in at #3 and beating out higher profile films A Wrinkle in Time and Love, Simon.
The picture is based on MercyMe member Bart Millard’s (J. Michael Finley) relationship with his abusive father (Dennis Quaid). These trying times served as the basis for the hit song “I Can Only Imagine.”
Co-star Madeline Carroll (The Magic of Belle Isle, Flipped) plays Bart’s youthful love (and eventual wife) Shannon, and for Carroll the project was an inspired experience.
“It’s so beautiful to watch,” said Carroll. “I feel like the whole film has this peace about it that is so wonderful. I had the best time. I couldn’t have asked for a better set to be on, especially from having taken a break for so long to come back and do a film was really so special and beautiful for me.”
