The Leisure Seeker marks a reunion for Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland, as the pair previously worked together in the 1990 feature Bethune: The Making of a Hero. This road trip film centers on John and Ellla Spencer (Sutherland, Mirren), a couple who travel from Boston to the Hemingway House in the Florida Keys. Ella has cancer and John is suffering from dementia, so this trip on their ’75 Winnebago (which they named “the leisure seeker”) may be their final vacation together.

“I was very lucky that it was Donald that I was dealing with, because Donald is extremely sensitive and emotional and he’s not a closed off person,” said Mirren. “If he’s upset you know it, if he’s happy you know it. He’s wonderfully exposed, for want of a better word. It became so much easier then to make this relationship that the audience have to believe is real on the screen.”

The Leisure Seeker opens in New York and Los Angeles March 9.
