The unsung hero of any superhero TV show or movie is the costume designer. After all, these characters are larger than life and meant to stand out, and that’s exactly what their outfits do for them. When Cress Williams signed on for the lead role in Black Lightning, he couldn’t wait to find out how he’d look in his suit. And, as he told us, he definitely wasn’t disappointed when he did. Black Lightning airs Tuesday nights at 9/8c on The CW.
Thrillers featuring the woods as its backdrop (It Comes At Night, The Witch) is often times a good thing, as the prospective horror of nature is grounded in reality. Based on Adam Nevill’s novel, The Ritual centers on four friends from college (Rafe Spall, Robert James-Collier,Arsher Ali, Sam Troughton) who journey through the Scandinavian wilderness after another friend’s passing. A supernatural evil is in their midst, and their outdoor jaunt turns into the ultimate nightmare.
David Bruckner, a filmmaker who’s received his share of acclaim from horror/thriller fans for The Signal and the anthology driven Southbound, directs this feature. Actor Andy Serkis (Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Black Panther) produced the picture which debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Pretentiousness is not a lovable trait, and it’s great to see when a bit of comeuppance enters the picture. In the new sitcom A.P. Bio, Glenn Howerton is Jack Griffin, a Harvard philosophy scholar who is forced to return to Toledo, Ohio and work as an Advanced Placement biology teacher. Instead of working in the higher echelons of academia, Jack is now employed at Whitlock High School where he butts heads with students, faculty, and Principal Durbin (Patton Oswalt).
“When you see someone who thinks so highly of themselves get handled, you get a certain amount of pleasure watching that,” said Howerton.
That being said, having a lack of filter may be somewhat of an admirable quality. “It’s also fun to see a character who is all id,” adds Oswalt. “Whatever he is feeling in the moment, he lets you now. For all of the times in your life when you have to kind of hide (what you’re feeling) – you envy those people. Whatever they feel, they just let it go out. It’s pretty amazing.”

A.P. Bio premieres February 1 on NBC (9:30/8:30c).
