Steven Soderbergh made a welcome return to feature film directing last year with Logan Lucky, and now he’s back once again with the thriller Unsane.
Always willing to push creative boundaries in cinema, Soderbergh shot Unsane entirely on iPhones, a method filmmaker Sean Baker employed with the critical hit Tangerine. The process was an eye-opener for the director, adding that it was one of his most liberating experiences as a storyteller. Claire Foy, whose star has astronomically risen thanks to The Crown, plays a young woman who’s committed to a mental institution who may be facing her greatest fear. Whether this challenge is real or a figment of her imagination is the heart of this presumably twisty film that should echo his Soderbergh’s underrated thriller Side Effects.
Unsane, co-starring Joshua Leonard and Jay Pharoah, hits theaters March 23. Check out the trailer and tell us what you think!
