Considering the fact that Tom Hanks is a two-time Oscar winner and generally regarded as one of the best actors of our time, you would think it would be difficult to outshine him in a movie. But if there’s someone who could do it, it would be three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep. They star together in Steven Spielberg’s political thriller The Post, and Hanks says there are definitely moments where Streep steals the show. (Click on the media bar below to hear Tom Hanks)
The Post is currently playing in selected markets, but will open nationwide on January 12.
Filmmaker John Curran’s epic narrative scope is best exemplified by Tracks and The Painted Veil, and he takes on another ambitious story with Chappaquiddick.
The feature centers on the mysterious events surrounding the tragic drowning of Mary Joe Kopechne (Kate Mara). Jason Clarke(Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) is Ted Kennedy with Nebraska’sBruce Dern co-starring as Joe Kennedy.
Clarke recently did great work in the critically praised Mudbound, and he makes a believable Ted Kennedy from the looks of the trailer. Billed as the “untold true story” of the event, Chappaquiddick should delve into the mystery of why Kennedy failed to immediately report the incident and instead went back to his motel and fell asleep. Check out the trailer below and tell us what you think!
Co-starring Ed Helms and Olivia Thirlby, Chappaquiddick opens nationwide April 6, 2018.
Director Scott Cooper reunites with Out of Furnace actor Christian Bale in the epic Western Hostiles. The 1892 set feature centers on a soon to be retiring Army Captain (Bale) who reluctantly escorts a dying Cheyenne war chief (Wes Studi) to Montana. During their journey they meet a widow (Rosamund Pike) whose family was killed by Indians, and together they traverse the various antagonists who mean to do them harm.
“If I have confidence in a director and I trust their judgment,” said Pike on collaborating with Cooper. “I can be completely free and that’s where the real joy of the job lies.”
Pike, who turned in an Oscar nominated performance in Gone Girl, is an esteemed actress in her own right, and in the clip below she talks about admiring the acting talents of Christian Bale.
Hostiles, co-starring Rory Cochrane, is now playing nationwide.
As proven by his work in How To Be A Latin Lover, Eugenio Derbez is a talented comedian who seems like the perfect partner for Anna Faris (TV’s Mom). The pair have their work cut out for them as the remake of Overboard is a rather daunting task, considering the original featured such great chemistry from lifelong companions Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell.
The genius stroke for the remake was to have the spoiled rich person be a dude (Hawn gets her comeuppance in the original) with Faris starring as the blue collar head of the family. Though matching the chemistry of Hawn/Russell is impossible, I’m betting Faris and Derbez do a fine job with this version. Check out the trailer and tell us what you think!
Overboard, co-starring Eva Longoria, opens nationwide April 20, 2018.
Though she may be a talented news producer who is growing more responsible by the minute, Great News protagonist Katie (Briga Heelan) is still attached to her mother (Andrea Martin). Whether it’s working on the job with her mom or coming to terms that smothering is just part of a mother’s love, Katie must find the balance of gaining more independence while also staying close to her family.
Speaking of family, Heelan discusses the joy of working on Great News. “I’ve learned so much honestly from watching the people that I work with and getting to work with the producers on this show has been unbelievable,” said Heelan. “Just to kind of watch how everyone conducts themselves honestly – it’s such a supportive, lighthearted atmosphere and environment. Everyone talks about family and parenting a lot . . . I’ve actually learned quite a bit about the kind of parent and co-worker that I want to be on this job in addition to learning things while we’re acting.”
