Season three of Chicago Med is in full swing and Colin Donnell, who plays cardiothoracic surgeon Connor Rhodes, had some valuable insight on the creative joys of working on the show.

“One of the great pleasures of television, I think, is getting that new script and learning something new about your character that you didn’t know the previous week,” said Donnell, a stage vet who’s worked on Anything Goes and Meet Me In St. Louis. “It’s like opening up a new chapter of a book – we’re getting to peel away the layers of these people as we go along. The greatest thing that any writer, actor, producer, or director can hear is you get to tell more stories.”

Chicago Med, co-starring Nick Gehlfuss and Brian Tee, airs Tuesdays on NBC (10/9c).
