The Nativity story has been told time and time again through cinema, but The Star offers a comedic and animated version of the story, with Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) lending her voice as Mary.

Rodriguez, who admitted to laughing “hysterically” five pages into The Star’s screenplay, had a personal take on how she crafted the voice of Mary.

“I love her gentle spirit, her calm nature,” said Rodriguez. “She is based off of my middle sister Rebecca who is just such a shining light of kindness and acts of service – always who I wish I was more like.”

The Star, featuring Zachary Levi as Joseph, is now playing nationwide.
