Dark times call for bright lights, and that’s why some of our best-known superheroes were created during America’s most difficult days. For example, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created Superman in 1938, while the USA was still in the depths of The Great Depression and the events that would cause World War II were unfolding. So, as America struggles with polarizing political and social issues, Henry Cavill — who plays Superman in the new Justice League movie — says we need our superheroes more than ever.
Justice League — which also stars Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and Ben Affleck as Batman — opens in theaters this Friday.
