Last year’s debut season of This Is Us packed an emotional punch unlike anything we’d seen recently on broadcast television, and it’s been rewarded with nine Primetime Emmy Awards nominations. Among them is an Outstanding Supporting Actor nomination for Ron Cephas Jones, who played William Hill, Randall Pearson’s biological father. The William/Randall story arc was, without a doubt, the series’ most poignant, following the relationship from their first meeting through William’s devastating death in the Memphis episode. The dynamic between Jones and Sterling K. Brown — who earned an Outstanding Lead Actor Emmy nod for his portrayal of Randall — was phenomenal. We spoke to Jones, who told us that, as an actor, he couldn’t have asked for a better emotional journey than William’s.

The second-season premiere of This Is Us will air September 26 on NBC.
