Director Sean Penn has received some of the worst reviews of his career with his latest effort The Last Face, a Liberia set drama headlined by Charlize Theron and Javier Bardem. With a critics rating of 8% on Rotten Tomatoes, this movie is currently available as a DirecTV exclusive and will hit select theaters and On Demand July 29.

The picture centers on the love affair between two doctors (Bardem, Theron) set against the backdrop of an insurmountable crisis. Though their humanitarian efforts are pure, the doctors find themselves understandably shaken and conflicted by their respective journey. Bardem previously worked with Penn in 2015’s The Gunman.

With such first rate dramas as Into The Wild and overlooked The Crossing Guard under his belt, Penn has carved out a solid directing career, and I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt and give The Last Face a shot. Check out the trailer below and tell us if The Last Face, even with a slew of bad word of mouth, is something you’ll put on your cinematic playlist!!
