Lately, Hollywood’s been mining its own past, rebooting or remaking old titles as entirely new movies. The results, however, have been disappointing. New versions of Footloose, Ghostbusters, Red Dawn and Total Recall have not lived up to the originals, either critically or commercially, and even the last few Superman movies have been poorly received. That hasn’t kept the studios from trying, though. The latest attempt? A reboot of Flatliners, the 1990 thriller that starred Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon and Oliver Platt. Sutherland returns to the movie in his original role, joined by Ellen Page, Diego Luna and Nina Dobrev. The plot is essentially the same: A group of medical students perform “near death” experiments, but the results take a very dark turn. Take a look at the trailers for both trailers — the 1990 and 2017 versions — and let us know which one you think looks better.
Flatliners opens in theaters September 29.
