For a while, DC might have stood for “down cycle,” since its movies have been underperforming for the last several years. Or maybe “damn critics,” since most of those movies have opened to savage reviews. But it looks like both of those may change with Wonder Woman, which has been getting positive reviews and great word-of-mouth ahead of its opening. And while star Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins been getting raves for their work, the movie’s also got a secret weapon working in its favor: It’s the first superhero movie in quite some time that doesn’t feel like it’s catering only to men. Jenkins told us she helped build the movie around a theme of female empowerment because she knew there would be a significant market for a female-friendly superhero movie.
Wonder Women is now playing in theaters.
