Pirates made off with the bulk of the box office booty this holiday weekend, as Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales stuffed $62.6 million into its chest. While the total was off slightly from projections, it’s still likely enough to push Disney into preproduction mode on a sixth Pirates movie, as the franchise remains a dependable performer. There’s an especially big holiday celebration at Disney HQ, since they’ve also got the weekend’s No. 2 movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Even in its fourth week, it was still strong enough to hold the second slot, with a take of $20.6 million.
Meanwhile, if you head to the beach for the holiday and find a group of people in red swimsuits and their heads stuck in the sand, that would be the Baywatch team, hiding from the embarrassment of their dismal opening. Even with a big publicity blitz from star Dwayne Johnson, the reboot of the ’90s TV phenomenon came up dead in the water, earning just $18.6 million, and the generally disastrous reviews will probably mean a huge second-week drop. That’s what happened to Alien: Covenant. In the wake of tepid reviews, last weekend’s champ took a big hit, falling off by nearly 71%. Its $10.6 million weekend was good enough for fourth place, though. Rounding out the top five was the romantic drama Everything, Everything, which brought in just over $6 million in its second week.
The faith based drama The Shack, headlined by Sam Worthington, did solid box office business this year with a $91 million worldwide take. The film, headlined by Sam Worthington and Octavia Spencer, hits Blu-ray and DVD tomorrow.
Based on the bestselling novel, The Shack centers on Mark (Sam Worthington), a family man whose faith in God is shaken after a devastating tragedy. After receiving a mysterious invitation from three strangers led by Papa (Spencer), Mark begins the gradual process of strengthening his spirit and resolve. The picture also stars Tim McGraw and Radha Mitchell (Silent Hill).
Spencer, who was also seen this year in Gifted, says that The Shack’s themes and first rate ensemble are not the only reasons to check out the film. Click on the media bar below to hear Spencer talk about the visual beauty behind The Shack:

Written, directed, and starring Demetri Martin, Dean centers on an illustrator (Martin, playing the titular role) who is struggling with his mother’s passing. Deciding to leave his New York hometown to interview at a Los Angeles ad agency, Dean’s possible move to the West Coast may help in his grieving process. Kevin Kline co-stars as Dean’s father, a retired engineer who puts the family home up for sale and strikes up a possible romance with a realtor (Mary Steenburgen). Gillian Jacobs co-stars as an Angeleno who catches Dean’s eye.
“My first film here is about grief and loss because I lost my dad when I was twenty,” says Martin, who makes his feature directing debut with Dean. “That was a while ago but of course I remember going through all that. Emotionally, I felt there was a story to tell there. I’m not the only person who’s lost somebody so I thought maybe there would be an audience out there – people who could relate to that kind of story. But I”m a comedian so I didn’t want to do a drama – maybe some day I’d like to make a dramatic film but this one I thought would be a good challenge because it will be a comedy but it some have real emotion to it and be grounded and heartfelt.”
