Back in the 1970s and early ’80s, The Love Boat was more than just a television show — it was the pinnacle of pop culture. Anybody who’d ever been anybody set sail for romance and adventure on the Pacific Princess. The show became a ratings bonanza; paired with Fantasy Island it made ABC unbeatable on Saturday nights. The show celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, and we talked to a couple of crew members — Gavin MacLeod (Captain Stubing) and Jill Whelan (Vicki Stubing) — about why they think the show became as big as it was.
Oh, and then there was the show’s secret weapon: that theme song! Recorded by Jack Jones, it cracked the Top 40 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart and earned him a cameo appearance in Airplane 2. But do Capt. Stubing and his daughter still remember the tune?
