Bernie Madoff had a peculiarly appropriate name. Because until he was caught, Madoff made off with billions of dollars of other people’s money in a Ponzi scheme that rocked the financial world and sent ripples through every facet of society, from celebrities to charities, from wealthy capitalists to ordinary investors. Madoff was so skilled in his deception, not even the people closest to him had any idea about his criminal activities. Now, HBO has produced an original movie about Madoff’s great swindle; The Wizard of Lies, directed by Oscar winner Barry Levinson, premieres on May 20. Robert De Niro stars as Madoff, and while he didn’t visit the North Carolina prison where Madoff is incarcerated, he tried his best to understand the man and his motivations. And even then, De Niro told us, it was difficult to figure out what made Madoff tick. (Click on the media bar below to hear Robert De Niro)
