While many people are excited about the future of Star Wars, with the new trailer for The Last Jedi having just been released, some are feeling nostalgic about the original. Believe it or not, the movie we now know as Episode IV celebrates its 40th birthday next month. After the release of the second sequel, Return of the Jedi, in 1983, most people thought the Star Wars series would be a thing of the past. (And when the VHS tapes — remember those? — were marketed as the Star Wars Trilogy, that seemed to confirm there would only be three films. Or so we thought.) But here we are in 2017, and the franchise is still going strong, with five additional movies and at least three more on the way. (That doesn’t even count the animated adventures!) The man who played Luke Skywalker isn’t surprised by the series’ continued success, though; Mark Hamill has always thought the force was with Star Wars. After his brief appearance in The Force Awakens, we’ll definitely see more of Hamill — and Luke Skywalker — when Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens on December 15.
