Maria Valverde is an actress who’s been on our radar thanks to her work in the epic drama Guernica and filmmaker Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings). Her latest film, Ali and Nino, is also an ambitious and sweeping drama, and it hits DVD via IFC Films on March 21.

The picture, which opens in 1918 Azerbaijan, centers on Nino (Valverde), a Christian who is in love with a Muslim named Ali (Adam Bakri). Believing their bond could withstand their share of trials and tribulations, the pair defy their respective families and marry. Their romance is put to the test when Nino finds it challenging to fit in with a traditionalist society. With the arrival of World War I, their love for each other is put to the test.

Ali and Nino comes with a high pedigree, as it’s directed by Oscar winning filmmaker Asif Kapadia (the documentary Amy). Christopher Hampton, a scribe who excels in penning scripts centering on the heartbreaking effects of passion (Dangerous Liaisons, Total Eclipse), penned Ali and Nino’s screenplay.
