Live by Night, director/actor Ben Affleck’s gangster epic which reunites him with novelist Dennis Lehane (Gone Baby Gone), hits Blu-ray on March 21.

The narrative centers on Joe Coughlin (Affleck), a World War I vet who makes his money robbing banks. After his relationship with a gangster’s moll (Sienna Miller) ends in tragedy, Joe decides to delve deeper into the world of crime with a move to Tampa. Selling rum during the Prohibition-era immediately moves Joe up the ranks, but his ascent takes a different turn after his dealings with a principled cop (Chris Cooper, who previously worked with Affleck in The Town) and the lawman’s unpredictable daughter (Elle Fanning). Though it’s an homage to the great James Cagney and Edward G. Robinson gangster flicks of yesteryear, Live by Night also has a pulse of its own. Though it’s a testosterone driven movie that’s filled wonderfully mounted action scenes, it’s Fanning and Miller who steal the show as the women who shape Joe’s life (unfortunately Zoe Saldana’s role as Joe’s love interest is underwritten).

Special features on the Blu-ray includes several featurettes (“Angels with Dirty Faces: The Women of Live By Night,” “The Men of Live By Night,” “Live by Night’s Prolific Author,” “In Close Up: Creating a Classic Car Chase”), deleted scenes (with optional commentary), and audio commentary from Affleck.
