One of my favorite genre films this year was Train to Busan, a movie that put an entirely different spin on the zombie apocalypse genre. The title comes out via Blu-ray and DVD on January 17 via Well Go USA Entertainment.
The story centers on a group of passengers who are being attacked by zombies that have taken over their train. While most of the action driven picture centers on their attempts to survive, the picture gives pinpoint focus to the relationship between a workaholic dad (Gong Yoo) and his loving daughter (Kim Su-an). Unlike most zombie flicks, the undead are just as dexterous as the humans, which in turn leads to some standout running sequence (a train station scene is a particular standout).
If it was just a balls to the wall zombie action film, Train to Busan would still be a n entertaining experiences. Thanks to wonderful work from Gong Yoo and Kim Su-an (her crying scenes are pretty heartbreaking), Train to Busan possesses a surprising amount of emotional depth.
Bonus features on the Blu-ray include a Behind-The-Scenes featurette and a segment titled “That’s a Wrap.”
