Ruth Negga, best known for her work as “Tulip” on the series Preacher, will be in for quite a ride thanks to the inevitable award nominations she will receive for Loving.
Based on the true story of Richard and Mildred Loving’s (Joel Edgerton, Negga) challenges of living as an interracial couple in Virginia, Loving’s strength lies in director Jeff Nichols intimate approach to their journey. Although the film deals with the landmark Supreme Court decision (Loving v. Virginia), Nichols doesn’t turn his film into one big courtroom drama.
“It’s a big theme in his work – humanity,” said Negga. “I think he does this thing where he elevates the ordinary – the quotidian to sort of a greatness that actually we can miss and pass over. Or we don’t take the time to appreciate. Jeff likes the quiet stories (and) he has this knack for teasing out the grace and extraordinary out of the ordinary.”
