Writer/director Derek Cianfrance has garnered a solid following thanks to his work on Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond The Pines, and this time out he goes sans Ryan Gosling with The Light Between Oceans. The post World War I set drama centers on the relationship between a lighthouse keeper (Michael Fassbender) and his strong willed wife (Alicia Vikander). When they find a baby adrift at sea, the lovers decide to keep the child for their own, but complications arise when the mother (Rachel Weisz) suspects that her baby didn’t die in that unforgiving ocean.
Vikander was excellent in the artificial intelligence thriller Ex Machina, and now the Luke Scott directed film Morgan treads a similar path. Kate Mara is a corporate assassin tasked with assessing the stability of Morgan (The Witch’s Anya Taylor-Joy), a humanoid who may be too dangerous for her her own good. The flick, produced by Luke’s father Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner), co-stars Jennifer Jason Leigh and Michelle Yeoh.
Other films coming out this week that are covered on the CinemAddicts podcast include Max Rose, an effective yet somber drama starring Jerry Lewis and Kerry Bishé, and Skiptrace, an action film with Jackie Chan and Johnny Knoxville.
