Premiering December 14 on Syfy (10/9c), The Expanse is a futuristic epic which initially focuses on the search for a missing girl. Steven Strait plays Jim Holden, the second officer of an ice hauler who, along with a hardened investigator (Thomas Jane) find themselves in the middle of this growing conspiracy.
Strait, who starred in the popular Starz series Magic City, is a fan of The Expanse novels and was invested in Jim Holden’s life changing journey. Though Holden has leadership qualities, he’s the kind of guy who would rather recede into the distance and enjoy a hot cup of coffee (for the java reference, check out the video at the end of this post). A distress call, however, immediately changes the protagonist’s priorities.
“Holden is driven mostly by this incredible guilt over the circumstances of the people that he cared about,” says Strait. “Because answering this distress call brought upon an incredible amount of destruction and pain and death to people he really loved. He has to find a sense of justice for what happened.”

The Expanse also stars Wes Chatham and Florence Faivre.
