Claustrophobic thrillers such as Wait Until Dark and Repulsion feature actresses at the top of their game, and Short Term 12 star Brie Larson may have found such a gem with Room. Premiering at the Toronto Film Festival, Room centers on 5-year-old Jack (Jacob Temblay) and his loving mom (Larson) who have been confined in a 10-by-10-foot space. Within this room, the mother has created an elaborate universe for Jack to keep his sanity in check, but when her own stability reaches its breaking point the pair decide to escape their dangerous environment.
The teaser trailer also features other folks (the film co-stars William H. Macy and Joan Allen) who inhabit Room’s environment, but whether they are individuals from the past or a figment of their imagination is not, if you haven’t read Emma Donoghue’s novel, specified.
Director Lenny Abrahamson may be the perfect choice to direct Room, as challenging perceptions and perspectives was one of the more alluring aspects of last year’s feature Frank. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think!
Room, which premieres at the Toronto Film Festival, opens in New York and Los Angeles October 16. A nationwide release is set for November 7.
