Guillermo del Toro is one of more diverse filmmakers we have today, as his stories combine fantastical elements and oftentimes heart-wrenching drama. Whether he’s playing with a big budget canvas like Pacific Rim or exploring a child’s surreal journey with Pan’s Labyrinth, del Toro always brings a human element to the proceedings.
The filmmaker’s latest venture, Crimson Peak, is a supernatural drama headlined by Jessica Chastain, Pacific Rim star Charlie Hunnam, and Mia Wasikowska. Del Toro’s been developing the project since 2007, and now the movie finally hits theaters October 16.
Another huge staple in del Toro’s films is that many of his protagonists are strong, independent thinking women. While Crimson Peak is a homage to such classical, gothic themed films like Rebecca, it also offers up the filmmaker’s unique approach to storytelling.
