Goth Suspense And Steampunk Style Spelled Success For Showtime’s ‘Penny Dreadful’

144Already renewed for a second season, SHOWTIME’S successful new horror series, PENNY DREADFUL, will conclude its eight-episode, freshman run tomorrow night. Set in Victorian England, this stylish mash-up of classic horror origin stories wove together such high-profile literary figures as JACK THE RIPPER, VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN and DORIAN GRAY in a wry yet sinister montage. Created by the masterful JOHN LOGAN (who wrote the screenplays for SWEENEY TODD and SKYFALL), the cast includes JOSH HARTNETT, EVA GREEN, REEVE CARNEY, and TIMOTHY DALTON.

At a press conference to introduce the series, JOHN LOGAN talked about the genesis of the project. (CLICK ON THE MEDIA BAR FOR AUDIO)

Adam Levine: People’s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ Charms On The Big Screen

2Currently in theaters, BEGIN AGAIN is the second cinematic romance of the season designed to reestablish date-night as a summertime staple. Hot on the heels of the teen-centric FAULT IN OUR STARS, this tuneful rom-com aims for a slightly older demographic and tells the story of two very lonely people brought together by their love of music.

Written and directed by JOHN CARNEY (whose previous outing, ONCE, mesmerized audiences and found new life as a Broadway musical), the film stars MARK RUFFALO, KEIRA KNIGHTLEY and ADAM LEVINE.

Crowned this year’s People Magazine reigning ‘Sexiest Man Alive’, LEVINE has already conquered the music world as frontman for MAROON 5 and as the compassionate judge on the television competition show THE VOICE. Here, LEVINE gets his shot at a supporting role as KNIGHTLEY’S smarmy, cheating rising-rock-star boyfriend and manages to knock it out of the park. With just a couple of very small TV roles under his belt, he takes to the big screen like a pro.

Earlier this week, LEVINE spoke with the press about his work in the film and, while quick to point out that he’s not the jerk in the movie, admits seeing some similarities. (CLICK ON THE MEDIA BAR FOR AUDIO)

Tonight’s A Wrap: It’s 13 And Out For Quirky Kinnear Comedy ‘Rake’

142Set to air tonight on Fox, the 13th and final episode of RAKE will see the irascible Keegan Deane attempting to deal with an annoying boy whose father was the only bidder on a ‘Spend A Day With A Lawyer’ auction.

Based on a popular Australian TV series created by PETER DUNCAN, this transplanted American version stars GREG KINNEAR as Keegan Deane (the titular ‘rake’), a narcissistic criminal defense attorney who somehow manages to be likeable despite massive personality problems (think HOUSE in a courtroom).

The series premiered in January to mixed reviews and was officially dropped last month. Many thought RAKE might have been better suited to one of the Fox cable outlets (rather than the regular network) and, speaking to TV critics at a press conference to introduce the show, KINNEAR spoke to exactly that issue. The series finale of RAKE airs tonight on Fox.

Better Bring An Appetite: Jennifer Lawrence Says ‘Hunger Games’ Finale Is Big!

491829447Just like the Twilight and Harry Potter movie series, The Hunger Games finale is being split up into two parts, and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 will be in theaters just four short months from now, on November 2.

As was the case with those other finales, the film is in two parts because the book it’s based on tells a much grander tale than the previous two. Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence (who plays Katniss Everdeen) told us Mockingjay will play even bigger on the big screen, and we’ll get to see much more of the capital than ever before. Land Ho! Explores Icelandic Unknown With Mesmerizing Score

Land Ho! (Sony Pictures Classics) Land Ho! centers on Colin (Paul Eenhoorn) and Mitch (Earl Lynn Nelson), former brothers-in-law who take a spontaneous trip to Iceland. While Mitch is a rambunctious, get up and go type of guy, Colin is decidedly way more laid back. Their disparate personalities may lead to a few verbal dust-ups here and there, but in sum their long standing relationship makes their Icelandic journey a sublime experience.

Part of the film’s appeal lies in its mesmeric and 1980s inspired music. Keegan Dewitt’s beautifully crafted compositions add an extra layer to what is already an inspired narrative from directors Martha Stephens and Aaron Katz.

Here’s a Soundcloud preview of the Land Ho! track:

During my interview with the co-directors, I asked about the genesis of their collaboration with Keegan Dewitt. The video is below (interesting fact: part of the film’s DIY editing was done on Katz’s dinner table):

Land Ho! opens in New York and Los Angeles on July 11. To check out my interview with actor Earl Lynn Nelson, head over to our sister site/blog Deepest Dream.
