‘Robot Chicken DC Comics Special’ Blu-Ray Has Aquaman…Manhuntered!

Robot Chicken: DC Comics Special

Fans of the DC universe should definitely pick up the new Blu-ray release Robot Chicken DC Comics Special, a hilarious send-up of the Justice League as well as other incidental superheroes who have graced DC’s world.

The main plot centers on Aquaman’s insecure feeling that he’s a total outcast in the Justice League of America, and now he’s considering the ultimate sin – joining Lex Luthor’s supergroup, the Legion of Doom.

Within a short period of time, Robot Chicken co-creator Seth Green (who voices Aquaman, Robin, and Batman) and crew fill this 23-minute plus special with a plethora of funny sketches. One of my favorites has Superman (Breckin Meyer), Aquaman, Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), and Batman hanging out at a singles bar which leads to several embarrassing outcomes (including Aquaman getting “manhuntered” by Martian Manhunter). Another top sketch includes Two-Face (Neil Patrick Harris) incessantly flipping his coin (so to speak) during a bathroom visit.

Part of Robot Chicken’s success lies in the writers’ absolute knowledge of their respective material, and even if their amusing digs at Martian Manhunter and Firestorm may not be fully appreciated by many of its show’s fans, tons of DC enthusiasts will be figuratively rolling in the aisles.

There’s over two hours of bonus content on this Blu-ray, including actors’ and writers’ commentaries, outtakes, and deleted sketches. The must see segment on the disc is “The Making of Robot Chicken DC Comics Special,” a 10-minute look at the process of making the project. The featurette delves into the stop motion animation aspect of creating the special, as well as seeing the writers’ room (which includes Seth Green) hashing out their sketches. Voice actors Abe Benrubi (“Jerry Markovic” from ER), Alex Borstein (Family Guy’s Lois Griffin), Tara Strong, Neil Patrick Harris are also seen in the featurerette.

Robot Chicken DC Comics Special is also available as a DVD release.

Hugh Jackman Loves ‘The Wolverine’ More Than Ever

The Wolverine

Hugh Jackman returns as the mutton chopped anti-hero The Wolverine, but this time the mutant finds a new level of mortality in Japan.

This latest film, to Jackman, brings an entirely new chapter in the adventures of Logan, the quintessential loner. “I think the script, particularly by how you see in the title, we are focusing on this character, we are focusing on his journey,” said Jackman. “It’s more intimate and a more interior story. We’re not wall to wall mutants and people flying around and lasers coming out of eyes, etc. This is a real true character story.”

The Wolverine opens nationwide July 26.

‘Fast & Furious 7’ Gets “Emotional” With Director James Wan

Fast & Furious 6

Director James Wan (Saw, Insidious) has a busy couple of months ahead of him, as he’s doing a ton of promotion for his upcoming films The Conjuring and Insidious: Chapter 2.

Wan is also taking over the reigns of the Fast & Furious franchise as he’s directing Fast & Furious 7, which is reportedly headed to Dubai and Tokyo for production.

In our interview with Mr. Wan, he talked about his approach to Fast & Furious 7.

“I have things that I’m designing right now that I think will be really thrilling from an emotional stand point,” said Wan. What I would like to bring to it is trying to approach it from a different angle, so to speak. Everyone asks me ‘how are you going to top the bigness of the last two films.’ I’m hoping that I would top it but not in the way that people are expecting me to top it.  We’re not fighting against space rockets or something (laughs).”

Click on the media bar below to hear Wan talk about the challenge of balancing his aesthetic and pleasing the Fast & Furious fans for the film, which comes out July 11, 2014.
