The Exorcist (Warner Home Video)

Director William Friedkin is having an eventful year, thanks to the release of his well received memoir The Friedkin Connection and the recent Blu-ray news of The Exorcist: Extended Director’s Cut.

Coming out on October 8th, this latest edition celebrates the 40th anniversary of the release of the classic thriller.  The collection comes with the two new featurettes: “Beyond Comprehension: William Peter Blatty’s The Exorcist” and “Talk of the Devil.” The Blu-ray also comes with an excerpt of The Friedkin Connection, but if you’re a diehard fan of the director, chances are you’ll already have the book.

“After my initial cut, I took out 12 more minutes before we released it in theaters,” said Friedkin.  “Years later, Bill Blatty asked if I’d review some of that rejected footage (which he always felt sould have remained) with an eye towards putting it back in a new version. In so doing I believe we strengthened the spiritual aspect of the film.”

Other previously released special features on the disc included two commentaries from Friedkin, a commentary from Blatty, the 1998 BBC documentary “The Fear of God: 25 years of the Exorcist” and the featurette “Faces of Evil: The Different Versions of The Exorcist.”

Warner Home Video has always made a point of giving journalists access to filmmakers whenever their top films are being released on Blu-ray and DVD, and several years ago we sat down with actress Linda Blair to talk about working with director William Friedkin.
