Opening Friday, Stoker is a cinematic tour de force for Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook, a first rate visualist best known for his movies Oldboy and Lady Vengeance. The film centers on a reserved teenager named India (Mia Wasikowska) who loses her father (Dermot Mulroney) in a car accident. Since she’s never been close to her mother Evie (Nicole Kidman), India gradually bonds with the mysterious uncle (Matthew Goode) she never knew existed.
During the Stoker press conference, Kidman was asked about her intense confrontation scene with Wasikowska, in which Evie blurts out, “Personally speaking I can’t wait to watch life tear you apart!” It’s a fantastic monologue from the actress, and it’s actually one of the many highlights of the first rate thriller.
