The Following (FOX/CR: David Giesbrecth)

The unrelenting, violent, and altogether shocking Fox series The Following widened its horizons last week with a further look into Joe Carroll’s (James Purefoy) loyal and psychotic disciples (Adan Canto, Nico Tortorella, Valorie Curry). Although the spine of the show centers on the complex relationship between Carroll and FBI agent Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon), the growing tension between the followers is nearly as arresting.

Will Emma (Curry) continue to follow Carroll’s orders, even though she does have a bond with his son Joey? After spending several years as a fake couple, will Paul (Canto) and Jacob (Tortorella) eventually have a falling out now that the Sarah Fuller (Maggie Grace) mission is finished?

Creator Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diares) recently talked about being a fan of the suspense/horror genre. “I’m a big reader of these kinds of books,” said Williamson. “If I have to choose a book to read, I always pick some kind of page turner, some sort of thriller. Whatever serial killer of the year story, like Silence of the Lambs, of course, being daddy. The all-time daddy. And so I like this world. And I’ve had this idea for a while in terms of wanting to do a story about an FBI agent who sort of is searching for his rebirth, and he sort of finds it via the man who killed him the first time. And that’s sort of the genesis of it. And then by adding the cult aspect of it is sort of how I was able to sort of come up with a way to sustain it into a series.”
