American Idol (FOX/Michael Becker)

The twelfth season of American Idol debuts with a two-hour tonight (FOX, 8 pm et/pt), and the main question centers on the compatibility of new judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, and Keith Urban.  Although Randy Jackson and Ryan Seacrest are the show’s constants, the mixture of three distinct personalities could be a combustible mix.

“Being here on Idol is a serious job,” says Nicki Minaj.  “We’re narrowing these kids down for America to choose, it’s a pretty big responsibility, because when they get these top 20 people, I want to feel like we’ve done a great job presenting the top (singers) to America.

Mariah Carey talks about why she decided to join the Idol family.  “I think the best part of being a judge on American Idol is the possibility of being a part of someone else’s life changing moment where they go on to live their dream,” says Carey. “Because I’ve been blessed to live mine, and so it’s kind of like giving back.”
