Announced yesterday amidst much fanfare, award winner LIZA MINNELLI has signed on the dotted line to guest-star as herself on the hit NBC musical drama series SMASH. One of just a few entertainers who have earned an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy and Tony Award, MINNELLI will be performing (with series star CHRISTIAN BORLE) an original song written by MARC SHAIMAN and SCOTT WHITTMAN. Set against the backdrop of Broadway’s musical theater world, the series has also lined up guest performances by JENNIFER HUDSON, JESSE L. MARTIN and SEAN HAYES.
Because she spends so much of her time touring the world in concert, the impulse might be to label this return to television a “comeback.” But, as LIZA told us just a few years ago during an interview we did here in Los Angeles, everybody always wants to say she’s staging a “comeback.” (CLICK ON THE MEDIA BAR FOR AUDIO)
Revisiting that interview reminded us of a great story MINNELLI told about the pros and cons of being celebrity offspring. (CLICK ON THE MEDIA BAR FOR AUDIO)
