Rust and Bone (Credit: Roger Arpajou/Sony Pictures Classics)

Rust and Bone, an emotionally gripping and occasionally heartbreaking drama, centers on Stephanie (Marion Cotillard), an orca whale trainer who loses both her legs in a freak, on the job accident.  Bullhead lead Matthias Schoenaerts is Ali, a blue collar worker and part time street fighter who forms a unique bond with Stephanie and helps bring her back to the land of the living.

Opening in New York November 23rd and in Los Angeles early December, the narrative doesn’t paint the two protagonists in a mawkish fashion, and movie fans looking for any syrupy, saccharine moments may be disappointed.  Director Jacques Audiard (A Prophet) offers up an unsparing look at two highly flawed people desperate to survive by their own rules, no matter what the cost.

In a recent press conference to promote the film, Cotillard explains why she still sees Stephanie as a complete “mystery.”  To hear Cotillard, click on the media bar below:

Cotillard and Schoenaerts also worked together in the upcoming film Blood Ties, a 1970s crime drama which co-stars Clive Owen and comes out next year.
