It’s being reported that DAVY JONES, former teen idol and member of the iconic ’60s boy band THE MONKEES, has died of a heart attack at the age of 66. He is survived by his wife, JESSICA, and four daughters.
Originally cast by television producers as part of a BEATLES knock-off band called THE MONKEES, JONES joined MICKEY DOLENZ, MIKE NESMITH and PETER TORK to become one of the most popular groups of the era.
We spoke with him last summer at the Television Critics Association PBS press event where he confessed that, despite his training in acting for the theater, he has no problem recalling his days as a teen heartthrob. (CLICK ON THE MEDIA BAR FOR AUDIO)
June 28 has been officially confirmed as the start date for ANGER MANAGEMENT, the small-screen comeback of former TWO AND A HALF MEN star CHARLIE SHEEN. He’ll play “Charlie”, a non-traditional therapist specializing in anger management, with a successful private practice. Sharing the screen will be SELMA BLAIR, SHAWNEE SMITH, DANIELA BOBADILLA, MICHAEL ARDEN and NOUREEN DeWULF.
Speaking to the Television Critics Association in January, FX president JOHN LANDGRAF admitted that he picked-up the series based solely on a pitch and outlines of the first 15 episodes (something the network very seldom, if ever, does). (CLICK ON THE MEDIA BAR FOR AUDIO)
ANGER MANAGEMENT is scheduled to debut 6/28 on FX with two back-to-back episodes
Opening in theaters next week, JOHN CARTER is an epic sci-fi adventure based on a series of stories by TARZAN author EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS and telling of a Civil War vet who suddenly finds himself transported to Mars where he finds himself in the middle of a whole wagon full of intergalactic turmoil. The film is being released in conjunction with the centennial anniversary of the character’s debut and will, hopefully create a new generation of BURROUGHS fans.
Marking the live-action directorial debut of ANDREW STANTON (THE INCREDIBLES), the cast includes TAYLOR KITSCH, LYNN COLLINS and WILLEM DeFOE.
STANTON thought that, by taking on this assignment, he’d be taking a little vacation from working in animation but he confessed to us that wasn’t quite the way it turned out. (CLICK ON THE MEDIA BAR FOR AUDIO)
JOHN CARTER opens in theaters 3/9
Coming to theaters this week, PROJECT X is a very hard R-rated teen party pic that’s being referred to as “The Hangover on crack”. Produced by TODD PHILLIPS and directed by NIMA NOURIZADEH from a script by MICHAEL BACALL and MATT DRAKE, the cast of (mostly) unknowns features THOMAS MANN, JONATHAN DANIEL BROWN, OLIVER COOPER, DAX FLAME, KIRBY BLISS BLANTON, ALEXIS KNAPP and MILES TELLER.
Given the preponderance of “politically incorrect” behavior in the film (teen sex, binge drinking, drug use and racial/sexual pejoratives), there’s not much doubt it will be targeted by a few special interest groups and that holds little concern for producer PHILLIPS who tells us that his best defense against protests is not to acknowledge or respond to them.
