Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, based on the John Le Carre novel is a 1973 set story about a top spy named George Smiley (Gary Oldman) who is tasked with finding a mole withing Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service (SIS).  The picture’s subtle, methodical pacing may leave some moviegoers impatient, while leaving other viewers transfixed.

During my interview with director Tomas Alfredson, I asked him how he and cinematographer Hoyte Van Hytema developed the visual look for the picture (the pair also collaborated on Alfredson’s celebrated drama, Let The Right One).  “We have a more philosophical discussion rather than a technical one,” says Alfredson.  “He works a lot like a painter and we try to define whose perspective (when) we’re shooting this or that scene from.  And in this particular film we tried to sort of create the third eye in the room.”

So what is the “third eye” Alfredson is talking about?  Click on the media bar and listen to Alfredson discuss how he framed his scenes with Van Hytema

Aside from his work with Alfredson, Hoyte Van Hytema also lensed David O’Russell’s boxing drama The FighterTinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, co-starring Colin Firth and Tom Hardy, is now playing.

In the following scene, George Smiley is visited by rogue agent Ricki Tarr (Tom Hardy, who will next be seen as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises).

It’s been a huge year for Michael Fassbender, as Jane Eyre, X-Men: First Class, A Dangerous Method, and Shame were released.  Although Jane Eyre and A Dangerous Method (in which he plays Dr. Carl Jung) did not receive the attention they deserved, X-Men: First Class was a box office hit and Shame, which reunited him with Hunger filmmaker Steve McQueen, garnered Fassbender a Golden Globe nomination.

With Shame, Fassbender plays a sex addict who is just fine living in his personal abyss until his sister (Carey Mulligan) reenters his life.  The actor plumbs similar depths with A Dangerous Method, as Dr. Carl Jung (Fassbender) enters an obsessive sexual relationship with a patient (Keira Knightley).
