AWARDS SEASON FAVORITE ‘THE ARTIST’ IS BLINDING US WITH SILENCE

penelope3Can a silent film be 2011’s crowning cinematic achievement?  Although the Oscar nominations have yet to be announced, it’s easy to see that the highly praised silent film The Artist is the frontrunner for Best Picture.  The recipient of six Golden Globe nods, The Artist was named Best Film by The Boston Society of Film Critics, The New York Film Critics Online, The Phoenix Film Critics Society, The Oklahoma Film Critics Circle, and The Washington Area Film Critics Association.

It’s also great to see Penelope Ann Miller, who started off her career doing such high profile work in Kindergarten Cop, The Freshman, Year of the Comet (a guilty pleasure), and Carlito’s Way, back on the screen in a big way.  Speaking of Miller, click on the media bar and listen to the actress give her thoughts on why movie fans have been “craving” for a film like The Artist

Are there any real competitors to slow down The Artist’s momentum?  The Descendants?  The Help? The pickings are slim, so my money’s on The Artist to be Best Picture winner at the Globes and the Academy Awards.

2011 YEAR IN REVIEW: BREAKTHROUGH ACTRESS JESSICA CHASTAIN

chastainpic7

Is it just me or was Jessica Chastain in every other movie that was released this year?  In 2011, the once unknown actress graced us with The Tree of Life, The Debt, Take Shelter, The Help, Texas Killing Fields, and Coriolanus!  To put the proverbial icing on the cake, Chastain received a Golden Globes and Critics Choice Award nod for her work in The Help.

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Chastain as she promoted The Tree of Life and, later in the year, The Debt. My favorite story from the two interviews came from Chastain’s recollection of almost introducing herself to Robin Williams. Thanks to the Oscar winning actor, Chastain’s Julliard School education was funded by Williams.

Click on the media bar and listen to Chastain talk about her synchronistic encounter with Mr. Williams:

Chastain will be seen in 2012 with Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy in director John Hillcoat’s (The Road, The Proposition) latest drama, Wettest County.

Meryl Streep Found Common Ground With Margaret Thatcher Through Motherhood

iron_lady_ver2Opening in select theaters today, IRON LADY brings to the screen the personal as well as the political life of controversial British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Directed by PHYLLIDA LLOYD, MERYL STREEP stars in the titular role and shares the screen with JIM BROADBENT, ANTHONY HEAD and RICHARD E. GRANT.  As different from her subject as night from day, Two-time Academy Award-winner STREEP is nothing short of brilliant in her portrayal of the often vilified former BPM. At the recent New York press conference to promote the film, STREEP talked about how she was able to relate to a character she thought she had so little in common with. Telling the story of an orphan boy living a secret life in the walls of a Paris train station, the adventure thickens when he gets involved with a stoic toy shop owner and an eccentric young girl. Adapted for the screen by JOHN LOGAN, the film stars ASA BUTTERFIELD, CHLOE GRACE MORETZ, BEN KINGSLEY, SACHA BARON COHEN, JUDE LAW and CHRISTOPHER LEE. At the recent press conference for the film, MORETZ confessed that keeping up with SCORSESE’S encyclopedic knowledge of cinema was no easy task. (CLICK ON THE MEDIA BAR FOR AUDIO)
