BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD: ’50/50′ IS NOT A “MOVIE ABOUT CANCER”

bryce25 Bryce Dallas Howard has two movies about cancer in the can this year; Restless, which she produced, centers on a funeral crashing youth (Henry Hooper) who bonds with a young woman (Mia Wasikowski) dying of cancer, and now 50/50 features Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a twentysomething who discovers he has a fifty-fifty chance of surviving cancer.

“The circumstances that the characters are in are almost the backdrop of the movie, whereas really what the movies are about are the relationships.  And it provides a high stakes scenario for these friendships and relationships to evolve quickly,” says Howard, who plays Gordon-Levitt’s girlfriend in 50/50 .  “So I don’t necessarily feel that 50/50 is a movie about cancer.  That’s certainly what the character is facing, but the takeaway for me was it was about this friendship.”

NAOMI WATTS CHECKS INTO DIRECTOR JIM SHERIDAN’S ‘DREAM HOUSE’

dreamhouse4 Relative lack of buzz on Dream House has me a bit worried; although it has star power (Rachel Weisz, Daniel Craig, Naomi Watts) and a solid filmmaker (In the Name of the Father director Jim Sheridan), Dream House may suffer a similar fate as the 1999 feature The Haunting (whose A-list cast included Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta Jones and Owen Wilson).

“He was trying to elevate from the kind of formulaic genre piece and make it not just about thrills and scares and mystery,” says Watts.  “He was trying to bring the characters into it in a way that was enriching the story and moving it forward.  And of course actors love it when a piece feels character driven.  And Jim has made a number of great films with great characters and great performances.”

STEVE JONES IS A “RENAISSANCE HOST” FOR ‘THE X FACTOR”

steve4 Tonight’s installment of The X Factor (Fox, 8 pm et/pt) features auditions in New Jersey and New York.  Host Steve Jones is confident the program takes a unique spin on the singing competition genre.

“The difference between The X Factor and any other show is we just film everything,” says Jones.  “It’s obviously a very slick process.  There’s a lot of talented people behind the scenes, but it’s kind of warts and all as well.  If I’m interviewing an act and Simon just happens to pass in the background, I’ll just follow him and have a chat.  It’s almost like a documentary.  We’re documenting the process instead of just adhering to the format.”

DANIEL RADCLIFFE MAKES A SMOOTH TRANSITION FROM ‘POTTER’ TO POLTERGIEST

woman_in_blackCurrently taking Broadway by storm in the mega-successful revival of the classic musical-comedy HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING, actor DANIEL RADCLIFFE will next be seen on the big screen in THE WOMAN IN BLACK. A classic ghost story in the gothic tradition, the film is directed by JAMES WATKINS from a script by JANE GOLDMAN and has a cast that also features JANET McTEER, CIARAN HINDS, ROGER ALLAM and SOPHIE STUCKEY.
Best known for playing Harry Potter in that popular Warner Brothers franchise, RADCLIFFE sat down with entertainment press recently in Manhattan to talk about his upcoming departure from HOW TO SUCCEED… and his upcoming film. Apparently, when the POTTER tent folded, much of the crew  followed him to his next gig, making the transition a pleasant one. (CLICK ON THE MEDIA BAR FOR AUDIO)
